Terminal City Iron is still active...sort of. They manufactured fire hydrants in Vancouver. I use to service forklifts and skid steer loaders there. They had interesting raw scrap. They have moved, and only import from China. The old buildings were used by the movie people for a while. One of the longtime employees lives down the block and I will ask about engines.

From the "Canadian Trade Index" for 1916, published by the Canadian Manufacturers Association. There are also lists of other types of engine builders.

You'll find it a valuable resource Richard, though copies can be hard to find.

This cannot be considered a complete list; for example the Vivian Gas Engine Works, which was established in 1909 is not mentioned. That could mean they were not part of the Association, or just that they were somehow missed. Easthope Bros. are also not mentioned, though I don't remember is they were actually manufacturing in 1915/6 or not. If I remember correctly there was a period where they were mostly reselling engines such as the Ferro. The details are in the interview with Peck Easthope published in The Raincoast Chronicles.

That's interesting about the Terminal City Ironworks 350 Astro. Sounds like Nye's Foundry which also ended up being a set dresser's supply. Apparently North Americans are not bright enough to understand that iron and steel smelting and casting are the foundation of an industrial society and if you can't do those things you are headed for third world status.

Nyes Foundry had some cannon patterns that I tried to buy but couldn't. They had a connection to Wills Oil next door. Like Douglas Oil they were a re-refiner , you could buy a gallon glass jug of SAE Wet oil for 25cents.Yes,the foundries are closing at a rapid pace. Hasbras and Thompson are still with us. To the unknowing, we are speaking of Vancouver BC. And speaking of Easthope, I saw some of their brass gurdies the other day. I once had a bronze topped oil boat stove made by Easthope.

Thanks Robert. I believe that part of the game with the Trade Indexes was that you only got listed and got articles written about your company if you paid for advertising. All about marketing.

Blair that is probably true: you paid to be listed. The payment must have been pretty modest judging from the small size of many of the companies listed. Some outfits like perhaps Vivian and Easthope may have felt they were well enough known in their market and perhaps had all the business they could handle.

That's interesting about the oil refining 350 Astro, I guess that was something they branched out into as a way of getting cheap oil to mix with sand to make their molds?

If you see any Simplex gurdies going cheap let me know; there is still a market for them. ;-)

I don't know if this site has been linked to already, but if not, here goes. It's an interesting history of Easthope Bros. compiled by Peter Easthope.

http://easthope.ca/index.html

Andrew, do we have enough interest or posts to justify a section on west coast Canadian engine builders such as Easthope, Vivian, Heaps etc.?

I wish every company put a date like that on their name tag.
