need to know what is correct spark plug for this engine? also, what do I need to do to the ignition system to run it on 12 volts, besides change the coil?

The manual calls for Auto-Lite A5 plugs.
On the engine try just changing the coil. Sometimes the starter solenoid fails on 12V. If you have electric Oil or temp sending units those have to be addressed. The manual shows the engine available in 6V or 12V
