g'day...just bought a boat with a ducati is7 air cooled...it runs great....however it will not go into gear forward or reverse shaft turns ok in neutral.....any ideas.....thanks william

It sounds as if it has been sitting too long and the engagement has seized.If you can open the transmission and get at the parts, you can check to make sure that the Fwd-N-Rev engagement shaft moves freely and that the fork that moves the small cone-shaped slider bushing, can in fact slide easily. That would make it go FWD.
For REV, there will be a gripping ring that closes on the outside of the internal large body . You should be able to fell the ring tightening / opening when you engage the REV direction. It will be barely visible - doesn't need much movement.
I use 30 weight oil to get things lubricated, and then put in a gear oil for running.

You may have to hang yourself by the ankles from the roof rafters to do this - don't ask how I know.
