Can you give me specifics on 63 Gray 170hp V8. Just purchased one that may have not been run since 84. How do I check it out? Also how do I get the gas out of the tank?

If the gas has been in the tanksince 1984 - it should be mor like varnish, than gasoline. It will also smell bad - kinda makes your nose crinkle. The only way to deal with the crud is to take out the tank, fill it with some gravel and bash the gravel around inside for a couple of hours ( get your kids to do that - it makes a lot of noise). Chemical cleaners usually are not effective on really old crud which this seems to be. Then check the tank for pressure integrity.

If you are really keen, you can poour in a gas tank coating and slosh it around. I haven't done that so I can't say if it really works although I've heard that it is good.

Alternatively, replace the tank.

I agree with Miro. I had to open a tank with a 3 1/2" dia hole saw, (four holes) and manually remove ten plus years of crud. With vapor purged, minor heat from a butane torch turned the crud to ash which was easily removed. After patching the holes, a product called "Quick Poly" was used to coat the inside, with very good results. The Quick Poly incapsluates any residue.

And if that doesn't work, I am officially in the market for a serviceable hull. I like the Century resorter, or the one with the fins on the stern, or any wood hull (not lapstrake) that would accomodate my fireball V8.
