I bought a sailboat built in 63 and it's got a graymarine flathead 4cyl gas motor in it. The title says 30hp. It looks to me like it's a sea scout 91cu from what I can find out online. I've got it fired up and running but I can't figure out where the drain plug is for the oil and I can't find an oil filter. I ran my hand under the pan today and no drain plug on the bottom of the pan. I guess you fill it through the dipstick tube but I can't believe there's no filter or drain. I'm sure it's obvious and I'm just missing it and I plan on buying the manual eventually but not until I pull it out of the water next week and do a bottom job on the boat, it really needs one. I can take pics if you guys need them. Also, how many quarts of oil does the engine take?

I am not familiar with your particular engine however it is common in a marine application to suck the oil out of the dipstick tube with a pump, as there is seldom room under the engine for a pan to drain the oil into. Oil filters were often an option on older engines. Many were sold, and used, without one.

Jake, Sea Scout 91 takes 4 quarts of oil per my 1950 gray owners manual. My Universal marine 4cyl has a built in oil "sucker" for oil changes. I suppose you could remove the Gray tranny cover to access the oil but a new gasket would be in order then.
