Can anyone tell me if the firing pin that rides on the trigger always rides on the triger through out a complete engine revolution. Or does it fall off after firing and get picked up again before closing and firing again?

The trip should close the points, start loading the spring, trip at the firing point, letting the points snap open. The quick opening is important to make the points "draw and arc". If they open slowly the spark will diminsh before the points open wide enough to fire the mixture.
