I have a 3HP Lathrop, serial #16216, that I use every summer in my wooden boat, built in 1922, here in Twillingate, Newfoundland. The engine works flawlessly, but I wish to replace the original carberator with a newer schebler, but when I change it, the engine does not start. Do I need to install an airbox with the carb? Also does anyone know the manufacture date of the engine? I know it was built before 1922, as it was installed when the boat was built.3HP Lathrop serail number 16216Built 1922

Jim
I have been gathering information to be able to Date the year of Mfgr of Lathrop engines, in this case having an original engine with serial number in a boat with a known mfg date is very helpful to my input data. Your serial number falls right into the sequence of numbers of Lathrop engines made between 1920-22 as you already knew, but so far thats as close as I can get it !
Very special Boat and motor, Thanks for the photos !

Jim
After looking at your photo again it looks like there is an older styled Gas mixer on your Lathrop, if you put on a float carburetor It will need to have an intake check valve installed between the carb and the intake port. This photo shows an original Lathrop valve !

Thanks for your info, Richard. The photo answered my question regarding the airbox. Sorry so long to respond.

I am considering placing my boat for sale. Offers accepted over $5000. The boat was built in 1922, the engine is original to the boat, 3 HP Lathrop with some accessories. The engine is flawless and the boat was restored about 10 years ago. There is no rot whatsoever in the boat. Stored inside about 11 months out of the year when I use to use the boat. Has not been in the water for 4 years, no time to use it. I can assist to arrange shipping. Photos at top of this post. Extra photos can be emailed upon request.
