I have been pondering how to come up with a small (1 - 5hp) gearbox and have realized that the clutch off a typical 1950's gas powered reel mower can be adapted into an open frame type of forward/neutral type of gearbox. I have a clutch mechanism that I saved some years ago and can see how this could be done. Granted these mowers aren't as 'available' as they were some years ago, but they do still come up cheap at tag sales occationally. I'm just pointing this out as an option if someone is creative and really needing something.

It has been quite a long time I have seen one of these. That too a modified lawn mower in this condition is really commendable. If you need bits and pieces for your build/modification, why not try used transmissions portals like cars trovit, autocatch, automotix, and world car parts?
They will be significantly cheaper than buying new and some even provide a warranty on those parts.
