Muncie Gear works apparently built an oddball stern drive unit for only a couple of years. It is quite unusual. One of its distint features is that it turns 360 degrees, with no stops. It is nearly all bronze cast construction on the externals. I need info on this unit FAST if anyone can help me. The boat is going back in the water this coming week so the drive must be finished. Any help or info is greatly appreciated!! Thanks !!

Hey John,

I don't have any info for you, but I did just lift a Muncie Gear Works motor out of the water. I was diving in about 15 feet of water looking for bottles and came acrost it. If you have any info on the unit I would greatly appreciate it if you could email me with it. [email protected] Thanks a ton, Trent Nabinger

The AOMCI.org site might help. Also; some time back;Tom Albertine,1336 N.183rd St.,Seattle Wa,98133 was listed as proctor of the AOMCI Neptune special interest group. Phone was 206-546-3026. Might want to do an Anywho.com google search to confirm this.

Actually I don't think it was 1981, that's probably when it was donated to the museum.

Well, time marches on. I haven't checked back for a few years. I garnered no info on the odd-ball Muncie stern drive unit but I did completely overhaul it and its attachments. It has been working for close to 3 years now so I guess I did okay. It appears that all of the generous responses concern the Muncie Gear Neptune outboards which are interesting little units but technically of little relationship to the outdrive I overhauled. Thanks

Chuck Sarno -
The records I have show the Neptune Model B1 to be a 1948 year model.
1.7hp 1 cylinder with a bore and stroke of 1.56" X 1.5".
R. E. Phelon was the maker of the magneto ignition system.
Hope this answers your question.

I just bought a bought a Muncie equiped boat that has ne chance of ever coming back to life. I believe it was a Cavellere by CrisCraft but it's hard to tell as the boat is so rotted. It has a 340 Buick V-8 and a Muncie outdrive with a nice two blade bronze prop. My outdrive does not spin 360 degrees like the other gentelman said his did but if anyone is interested in it cheap email me at [email protected]. I'm in Kansas City. I also have all the marine hardware for the engine if that interests anyone.

I have several old small neptunes. They all work well on 25 / 1 mixture. Never pull the head off otherwise it is all fair game to dissassemble. When running be sure to turn off the gas and run the carb bowl out prior to pulling out of the water. Also: make sure the screws are tight on the handle and all around the engine. If not they will end up in the water. Use grease in the lower unit. The gas tanks have a tendency to split open and leak. You can solve that problem by opening up the mounting holes for the tank and inserting some electical rubber pass throughs then remount as you would normally.

I would not buy a motor with the skeg broken off
but the price you mention for a running motor is ok. the motor shown is a parts motor because of the broken skeg, These were cheap department store motors, and millions of them sold. They are always on the internet. Wait till a good one turns up

Neptune Mighty-Mite, Model#WC1, 1.7 HP**Weighs 17 lbs.** manufactured in 1945-1947 by Muncie Gear Works in Muncie. It will push that boat but I would not get in a high wind with it. That motor is more for canoes and small boats (under 10 ft)long. You load the bottom with marine bearing grease and would be a good idea to put rubber or nylon washers on the gas tank mounts to ease vibrations to the tank. That motor tends to crack gas tanks. Every time you run it be sure to close the fuel valve and run the bowl out of gas then you will never have a problem with it. A good motor for your pontoon would be a 5 or 7.5 if you don't need to go fast. May I suggest a Scott 1-16 shift which is a 5 and has forward and reverse along with an intregral gas tank.

I have just acquired an older boat with a Muncie Gear Works Flex-Drive 500 I/O drive and would like to find parts, primarily gears for the prop shaft also the shifting collar. Thanks for any help, Verlin.

Found the information below on the home page of this Old Marine Engine Forum. Thought some of you may not have not seen this.

Remove the cap nut on top and it should release with a couple taps with a wooden mallot on the bottom edge. Tap on one side then the other, or get a piece of hardwood and a hammer. Put the wood against the bottom edge of the flywheel and then tap with a hammer. Work that on opposite sides.

i can personaly say that the 1960-1969 mighty mite (wc1)is a GREAT little outboard for the size
very noisey due to a lack of actual muffler (has a pipe with a few holes near the top)
the broken skeg has no effect on steering or operation but if you get one FIRST THING replace the lower unit seals to ensure proper flow from the impeller (one gasket, one grommet and two rubber O rings .... no lower unit oil they use water proof grease
mine is currently running like a champ with a gasket made of old milwalkie box lol
