Hi folks,
I have a single cylinder Blaxland Pup that I would like to identify.

The motor is in pieces and, as seems typical, the water jacket has rusted out. The previous owner has cut away the remains of the water jacket. His idea was to make a new one out of fiberglass but I think the cylinder is to far gone for that to be a viable option.

The brass name plate is missing and we can't find any numbers on the crankshaft or engine base.

The bore is 2 3/4 inches and the flywheel is at the driven (aft) end.

Hi Chris, Looks like you have an original "Pup". 2 1/2 horsepower. Very hard to find a Cylinder/Barrel for them now. The Master Pup was 3" bore and the later ones and most (common SXT) are 3 1/4" bore. There are still a few SX models around which are 3.5 HP with the rear flywheel.
Hope this helps,

Dave

Thanks for the info Dave, we had thought it must be an early example and your comments seem to confirm that.

I have got what appears to be a serviceable cylinder off a twin (txrr I think) and a new piston to match but I have been told that it won't fit. It looks like it should so I haven't given up yet, although I am a bit concerned about vibration. The flywheel about an inch smaller in diameter than later models.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Chris, If it is off a Twin (TXRR) it is 3 1/4' bore the same as the SX and SXT 3.5 HP and will not fit a 2.5 HP Pup. In saying that I need to know what the original cylinder configuration looked like. Is it the cylinder and crankcase top all in one, or does the cylinder sit on a separate casting forming the crankcase top half and held on with 4 bolts. If it is this model (a Master Pup)then you may be able to use the twin cylinder. I will find out for you, otherwise, I know a chap who has a NEW cylinder to suit a Master Pup (3"bore) and may be willing to part with it.
Where are you located?

Cheers,

Dave

Dave,
The cylinder mounts on top of a separate upper crankcase casting with 4 bolts. I will have to check my measurements but I am pretty sure that the bore is 2 3/4". The new piston and serviceable cylinder are 3 1/4".

More problems appear the further we go. The gudgeon pins for the 2 3/4 and 3 1/4 pistons are different sizes. Another potential problem area is the stroke. Do you know if the crankshafts would be the same?

The idea of the new 3" cylinder has some appeal, but I would also need a new piston.

To give you a better picture of what I have, my serviceable cylinder needs some work as it has part of the mounting flange broken off and has some pitting in the bore.

I am in Launceston Tasmania.

Thanks
Chris

Chris
The best info on Blaxlands can be obtained from Aubrey Rose at Kirrawee, Sydney on 02 9521 4717. He started as an apprentice with Blaxland in the 1930's and built the Chapman Greyhound I own (and have just collected from him following a complete overhaul). He might even be able to find you the parts in his workshop! He's a mine of information but is in his late 80's and not in good health, so I'd contact him sooner rather than later.

Hi folks,
Things have progressed a little.
I have spoken with Aub (thanks Wendy) and it sounds like the stroke is the same and so we should be right with the 3 1/4" cylinder. All we need to do now is a bit of cleaning up and putting together, and try and track down the exhaust manifold and expansion box.
Cheers,
Chris
