Oer the weekend, I was fussing a bit more with the ignition box for the St Lawrence.
I found that the current drawn before any changes was over 2 Amps.
I didn't like the idea of so much current gong through the timer contacts. so I played around with inserting a resistor in series with the coil leaving the relay connections unchanged.

I found that a resistor in the range of 1.5 to 3 ohms reduced the spark slightly, but also reduced the current to less than 1 Amp so there are less current going through the timer points.

Over 3 ohms the spark got too weak.
