After some searching back and forth, I found this entry

which provides quite a good description of ignition coils and , is one of the few sources that shows the voltage and current flows as the interrupter opens and closes the contacts in the primary circuit.
It also reports the date of 1836 as the beginning of the development. It's kinda neat that we are still using this invention 177 years later to great enjoyment ( reference to the upcoming visit in Louisiana)
