The base is a pretty thin casting for the job and it cracked due to what I suppose is the scrapper hoisting the engine out with a chain or bar of some kind. I didn't know the extent of this damage when I got the engine.

I just let my fingers do the walking and tried the guy with "40 years....." This is the happy result. They drilled and tapped the side cover holes even. It was expensive ( based on my experience) but looks like it was worth it.
