I went to the Essex Brass company web site and was reading about the oilers they make with check-balls to keep back pressure out of the oil space. All these years of using oilers and I find I was pretty much ignorant of how those style of oilers really worked. They have the check ball but also have a tube to divert the back pressure ABOVE the oil (and they have a pressure proof screw in fill plug to hold in the pressure). These 3 things together are required to have the oil still drip between burst of back pressure (like I have in my Dunn twin)
I bought 2 new check ball oilers from Lee Pedersen (out of GEM) which now drip fine when running. I had tried to just modify the NOS oilers I had by machining a space and threaded
retainer for a check ball but there was no by-pass tube nor pressure tight fill cap so they still did not work. Live and learn. FYI,those oilers are very good (I believe they are from Essex Brass but Pedersen does not advertise that)
