I recently purchased an island cottage on the ocean here in Maine. It included a hand built 16' Peapod rowing/sailing boat made from oak, cedar and pine. The previous owner had the boat built but sailed it very little. The original boats of this type go back to the 1870s and were rowed or sailed and sometimes powered for fishing and lobstering.
I would like to freshen up the boat, and power it with a vintage marine engine. Though I have many questions the main ones are:
1. What is an appropriate size engine to power the boat?
2. Do I need a transmission or should I stick with a 2 cycle and just start the engine in the other direction to reverse it.
3. What motor weight limit should I be looking for?
4. What recommendations do you have for engine make.
I am a new comer to vintage marine engines though I do own a Palmer conversion Model B Ford engine and have restored a few Model A Fords.
Thanks for any and all assistance.
David
