Several months ago I recieved a long distance phone call from a nautical collector friend that had been looking through an old dark icy cold barn and spied a flywheel under a shelf in the back, he asked what it was - the reply "an old boat motor and it had been there a looong time.
Shinning the flash light on it he saw a brass tag and Copied down the name "McGarigle Machine Co. He also mentioned that every thing in the barn was for sale and would be going back to get some other things in a few weeks and to let him know if I was Interested ??
Several days later after researching every bit of my marine info sources I couldn't find even a single reference to this Company ??
On his return to the barn my friend and the owner pulled the engine out into the open and took these digital photos.
-
Tag-- Says
McGarigle Machine Co.
Mfgrs
Niagara Falls
Type-B No. 2346

Does that indicate there was a type A or C or D ??

Now with the state and city and knowing that it was indeed an Old Marine Engine I researched again-- NOTHING came up. After searching Co. names in that city this was my surprise !!

McGarigle was in business in 1880's as a foundry and machine Co. making steam engines, cars and rails for early park trains and converted to gas engs and mfgd them untill about 1910. This marine eng without oilers was probably made in mid teens and may have been an effort to continue mfging after the wane of the park Trains.
Still looking for any Information on this Co., and letting you know that this Old McGarigle twin is spending its days now among the swaying Palm trees, balmy weather and (Huricane Watches) of South Florida ! Richard

ABM

Thanks for posting the photos, the red engine above # 238 was found about 30 miles north of Niagara Falls on the Canadian side.
Looks like these two came down the assembly line together a lot of years ago !

Hello, I could not believe my eyes when I saw the NO. 238 McGarigle motor on this website. My buddy and I have No. 237 McGarigle motor which you have pictured in your Website. I had this motor in my possession when I was 13 years old. It was my neighbors who lived in Tonawanda, New York when he was young. He let me play around with this motor for several years. I later returned it to him. Two years ago my partner asked the widow of this man if she still had the motor in her possession. She said yes, and asked him if he would like to have it. He said yes, and the rest is now history as you could see in the pictures. We have both been working on this project. I build the stand and the coil box, and my partner restored the motor to the condition you see. We took the motor to Grand Island for the Antique Boat show. This is where you took the pictures. We have been trying to estabilsh a history on this motor. We met a man that was actually at the McGarigle Machine Co. in Niagara Falls, New York. He worked across the street. Said He felt it was made around 1911 and was used in a small launch on Ellicot Creek here in Niagara County. We would still like to know more and my Partner is researching information in the Niagara Falls Library. If you would like, send an email and I will put you in touch with the new owner to discuss more about this motor and others like them.
