I was talking to a former employee of the St Lawrence Engine Co (Brockville, Ontario) recently. In addition to the three cylinder engine, StL also built about 25 four cylinder models. These were 2 cycle machines with the separate cylinders. Not sure of displacement, but most likely they used the big 4"x4" cylinders, which would have given it a total hp of about 24 HP (1917 manuals list the 4cyl at 20 hp, but this appears to refer to the Ford conversion). The fours were not easy to start, unlike the three cylinder engines and did apparently run as well as the threes. The company did also build a prototype six cylinder 2 stroke. This engine was extremely difficult to start and the timing had to be set in a very specific point to get the engine to fire. The crankshaft was apparently too weak (the six would probably have been built from thre 2 cylinders) and kept breaking at the fifth and sixth cylinders. This engine was the only one built and supposedly was still around in the 1960's.
I've never seen a four either,or even a picture. I wonder if there are any still around.
