Hi, having a fueling problem I think. I think its down to a little dirt in the lift pump and a dirty filter. Filters are getting expensive for this old engine and I was wondering if it was possible to bypass the engine mounted filter for a Delphi glass water separator/filter and maybe install an electric fuel pump to assist the lift pump.
Or is this a stupid idea

Dirt in any fuel system for a diesel is REALLY bad.
Anything you can do to deliver clean fuel to the injector pump is worth the effort.
The challenge you will have however is to make sure that you have NO air leaks in the new bypass system.
It's probably worth the effort to think through the plumbing for the bypass system so that you can easily get at all the fittings.A couple of hours of your time and a a little extra money for good fittings will be well worth it.

access isnt a problem as its an open launch i use as a tender/boarding boat. i just know the lift pump is old and not sure how servicable it is. the original engine mounted filter is expensive to get filters for so my thinking is putting the new water separator/filter first, then an electric 2.4-4psi fuel pump onto the original pipework. removing the filter in the engine mounted bowl and just have it free flow through there.
