I have a Palmer M-265 circa 1970 with an International block. After not starting i tracked the ignition problem to the external resistor. After replacing the resistor the engine runs well. However the resistor gets very hot. Is this normal?- I don't remember this hapenning before. It is too hot to touch more than a second or two, and could melt the nearby ignition wires. The coil also is getting hot. I didn't run the engine very long- wondering if there is a voltage problem casing the heat. The resistor heats up as soon as the ignition is on, even if engine is not running.

Some ignition systems have a wire from the key switch which by passes the supply voltage directly to the coil when actually starting the engine. This system uses a coil without a resistor as soon as the engine starts the coil is then supplied current through the resistor which limits the current flow to normal operation. I don't know what value resistor you are using perhaps it is too low resistance and the excess current is the result. Simarly some systems have a contact which turn on the field current to the alternator when the key is on. On occasion if the key switch is changed and if the switch does not have the alternator field connection the typical shade tree mechanic solution to get the alternator to charge the battery is to connect the field to the battery. Works great until you shut down the engine and then the field current flow discharges your battery as it is not disconnected by the switch. Minor detail. Don't know if this helps or confuses the problem

Those things do get hot. If the points are closed with the engine not running then it will heat right up.If the points are open then it heats slowly. If the charge system is over chargeing then it will heat more.
