The following was sent to me by Ken Robb in Australia.

quote:

Help required.

I have located, and intend to restore, a 4-cylinder Palmer Bros. marine engine and gearbox, Model LLH No.3066344. HP20?.

It's in fair mechanical order and turns over. It is equipped with a side draught Breeze carbie and must be twin ignition (8plugs).

Needed - some info on age, original colour, the availibility of missing parts such as water pump, oil pump and magneto. Gasket sets or make my own? Also whether a water-warmed inlet manifold may be available - before I re-manufacture the existing manifold which has succumbed to the expansion of rust on the outside skin.

This is early days and my first enquiry but I'm another one of these crazy idiots who takes joy in restoring fine old engines, and I'd also be interested in some knowledge of the type of hull that this power plant would be fitted to so that it could end up in its corrrect setting. I'm hoping that Richard A. Day Jnr., and/or other enthusiasts may come to the rescue of an orphan on the other side of the world.

Regards,
Ken Robb

Will get to you Ken as soon possible. I think you have one of the 3000 lifeboat engines Palmer Bros made for the WWII US Maritime commission for Liberty and comparable ships..Will need to do a little research on what I may have in regard to the particular model. 3066344 serial number fits for the period 1942-1946. Your engine was made in 1944. The last two digits of the serial number from 1909 until about 1965/66 were the year the engine was made.
