As my flywheel was missing on my engine I found a person who has agreed to let me borrow a flywheel to have new one cast. The problem is what is the correct fit. My shaft starts its taper about 3/8 inch from the timing gear. Is there a spacer between the gear and flywheel as the distance measured from the face of the gear to the end of the taper is greater than the thickness of the hub on the flywheel? The borrowed one is off a straight shaft crankshaft. I have looked at so many pictures showing no spacer and many that look like there is a spacer. I guess there has to be some method to keep the crankshaft from shifting to that end. From the parts list I have it shows a shiny surface on the side of the crankshaft connecting rod boss. If that is what keeps everything aligned then does the flywheel fit tight against the gear face or is there a clearance measurement to keep the crank free? If so what would the measurement be? There isn't a setscrew on the gear to keep it in place.
Thanks,
Frank
