My boat has a grey marine flathead 4 cylinder engine and I am trying to determine what model it is...the little plaque is not there. I've seen the sea scout and it isn't that one. Some questions:
1) If I want to get an operator's or maintence manual, do I have to know the model of my engine or are all grey marine 4 cylinders basically the same? The website I found with manuals doesn't distinguish between models but I want to be sure before I buy.
2) Can I use the casting number to find the model?
3) I think I am having generator problems, but all the marine mechanics books I find talk about alternators and what proper output for alternators should be...does anyone know where I can find info about generators?
Any info is appreciated.

If your distributor sticks strait up through the head and you have a casting number that starts cw or cwc then you have continental F series engine, either 124,142 or162 ci.If you have any csating numbers post them and someone will id it.

The manual I have for my 25Hp 4cyl is the same booklet for about 6 other models. There are a few places where alternate information is provided for the different groups of engines, and the specs are listed in tables, but the operation and maintenance are basically the same.

ok, finally...the casting number is Y400 A418. I have a maintenance and parts manual for a Sea Scout-91, which is extrememly similar, but not exactly like my engine. The location (or presence) of an oil filter being the main difference so far.
I also found a model and serial number on the transmission (Paragon: "Made exclusively for Grey Marine...") Model RDBS-7, #F-5951. Does any of this info tell us what the model of the engine is?
Also, the water pumps that I have are Jabsco Model B. (One is engine cooling, the other is wet exhaust). None of the guys in any of the Jabsco vendor repair shops have a clue about it. We fitted a new impeller based on the current (maybe recently obsolete) pump that is most similar to mine. It looks and measures identical to the impeller I removed from the pump. Now water is leaking out the grease cup threads unless I screw the cap down really tight and then the water leaks out the shaft, which I am pretty sure it should NOT do. The water coming out the shaft feels hotter than the water that went through the engine already! Does anyone have a suggestion on what could be the problem?

The Y series of continential engines were made in 69,91 and 112 cubic inches. With a Y in the casting number i would think its one of those three. On the outside they look much the same, but can have differances depending on age and where they are installed. The oil filter is one part that was upgraded and changed over the years.

TJ36,

You might have to provide some more info...

Is it gas or diesel? How many cylinders? Is there another tag with a model number or serial number? How do you know it is a Gray Marine Engine? Do you know the bore & stroke or displacement? Approximate year of manufacture?

If it is a gas engine it is probably a Continental block. If it is a diesel it is probably what became the 71 series Detroit Diesel engine.

CWC is very common on continential engines. If you have a distributer comeing straight up out of the head its an F series either 140 or 162ci.They are a common replacement for bad engines in massy harris, cletrac, oliver and silverking tractors. There is one of thease in the drake tail work boat at calvert.

Mine is a Gray marine engine in a 56 Century; 4-cylinder, model 620. I am having big trouble getting the thing to idle properly --once I put it in gear, it stalls unless the idle is set at screaming. Had the carb off a few times and cleaned it out as best I could and think that all passages are clear, etc. Someone mentioned timing as a possible problem. Does anyone have any info on how to set the timing, idle RPMs, points, etc., on this thing --or any other ideas on what may be wrong?

Thanks

Hello;
I have a phantom 462, running, that belonged to my late dad. I also have the owners handbook. Boats are one of my hobies. (spelling is not!) I have a 1969 Pearson 28' cabin cruiser inboard that had a V8 (gas hog) in it. I am thinking about putting the phantom in it. It does not have the reduction gear in it. I am considering using a 13x8 prop to obtain a simi-plaining gas sipper. Anyone have any thoughts, ideas, comments, trades, etc? John

Contact David Van Ness Engineering, 252 Lincoln Avenue, Ridgewood, NJ 07450. 203-445-8685. He is probably the most knowledgeable person for 4, 6, and 8 cylinder 4 cycle engines. Has parts, engines, literature. He is heavy into old wood boat Gray engines. Tell him Frank Petran recommended him.

My book list the 25hp as 91" and 390lbs direct drive or 420lbs with reduction.
The 112" is listed as 31HP and 400lbs direct drive 425 with reduction.

I have a Gray Marine 4-112. My normal operating RPM is about 1200. With the engine hot, the oil pressure is about 20 pounds. 35 when cold. The manual says normal is 30 to 40 but doesn't specify the RPM. Says less at idle is OK. I get 15 pounds at 600 RPM hot. I am wondering if I am in the normal range with just 20 pounds at 1200 RPM. The engine has 50 hours since the rebuild.

I have a Sea Scout 25 rebuilt to perfection, it runs fine but with the prop I have on teh 21 foot minitug it doesn't want to get over 2000rpm. I know I will need to trim down the prop, but want to know if anyone knows the max and most efficient RPM fro that engine. Basically looking fro a power curve/ fuel consumption torque curve overlay to determine where to run her and how far to push teh RPM. Its a drystack. I have a Yanmar replacement so anyone wanting a perfect Grey 25 e-mail me or call (949)-280-0886

I used to have a similar engine - I found that after running for a while, it seemed to run out of fuel.
After going through many gyrations, I found that the top and bottom half of the carb had loosened. There were 6 small machine screws that were very slightly loose, but just enough to lean out the mixture.

I eventually got into the habit of checking the tightness of the screws several times per season.

I needs a collection of slot screw drivers that allow you to reach in behind the carb.
It requires a Zen approach - don't do this unless your mind is clear and relaxed
