1959 Lyman with a 109 gray
Could not get inning to go fishing earlier. Changed plugs and points and coil. I am not getting a blue spark at the points like I'm used to seeing in points systems. The stud on the distributor body that the points clip to and the condenser wire go to is this supposed to be totally insulated from the distributor body?
Kind of hard to explain The stud goes through distributor body. Points and condenser hook to one end. The other end on the outside of distributor two wires go to. I'm wondering if there is cracked or broken insulation around the stud and its "grounding out" to distributor body?

Shade tree mechanic at the local marina just told my dad "sounds like the points are grounded" Trying to figure out what this means

Get a twelve volt test light. Bump the engine until the points are open. The coil should have power on both terminals. If the points are grounded it will only have power on one terminal. No power on either, trace down the supply, power on one, look for a ground at the distributor. Power on bothe, bump the engine until points are closed, should be power on only one coil terminal, power on both, look for an open between the coil and points, your test light will allow you to tes at different places.

No reason I can't use a fluke voltmeter in place of test light is there?

I have a fluke, wouldn't use it for this. Ground your Fluke, hold your positive cable, touch your finger. You will probably get a voltage reading, 12 volts if your hands are damp, this won't fire anything.
