I have a 30 foot keeler. i can get the engine to run and idle for hours. When it is put into gear it dies. It has been serviced recently. The water sump has smashed so a bypass with a filter has been put in.

I would think that you have a fuel problem. Check that the throttle linkages from the throttle control column to the carby are set correctly. Is there sufficient fuel getting to the carby - any kinks/partial blockages in the line? Does the carby spit when you put it under load by engaging gear??

Why do you think the water/cooling may be related??

I would also check your exhaust system...the pipes and muffler may be coked up, these engines like to ''breathe''

Sound like an air lock or blockage in the fuel system. There's enough trickling bye to keep it running at idle, yet as soon as you apply load, and the demand for fuel increases it splutters to a halt. The fule line must run in one continuous fall from tank to the carb.
If it's a float type carb check the float is vertical and isn't jammed.
