hi all i am new to marine engines and just aquired a p55 i think and told by prevous owner it is 8hp the only id tag is on gearbox and says 20b217 , it is fitted with brass solex carb and has two small coils and points , and is hand start , this is were i have a major problem , the bottom chain sprocket is siezsed solid and i do not have a manuel and have no idear how to remove , the crank turnes but both sproket and gear which flywheel engages to are rusted solid , and marlex marine have not got parts i need so have run out of idears any help or advise welcome as this is my first restoration of a marine engine regards to all graham

Usually the coils and points variety were P66 and had dynastart or starter and generator I think.
However to unsieze sprocket:-
remove flywheel-
undo nut
hold lever pressure on left hand side between flywheel outer and engine, clump r/h side with clump hammer, it should spring off.
clean up sprocket with wire brush and carefully remove circlip (if its there).
Warm up sprocket with blowtorch, not too hot, squirt with easing oil, repeat several times.
Using a hard block of wood and hammer on a tooth attempt to turn the sprocket. repeat all the above sevaral times and it should free off to a loose fit.
The centifugal latches should be a simple task to refurbish.
I'm sure I can find another sprocket if you ruin it.
The centre part is crankcase, so big problems if you break that off!.

thankyou very much for reply , i will try that tommorow , also can anybody tell me were i can obtain a chain or will a motor bike chain or similer fit regards and thankyou

Standard chain fit, its 1/2" x 3/16" I seem to remember. Just measure the distance between the rollers and the width of the sprocket.

thankyou george for your help , it worked but it held on to the last, no damage to cast but the gear is shot , so if you have one how much is it with postage , i took the head of today the water ways were blocked and took side cover off water jacket have never seen so much rubbish i dont think when this engine was running the water did not go round engine that well many thanks regards graham
