Hello I am Jim the curator of the historic Yacht Thunderbird. We are in the process of rebuilding the transmissions on the craft. The trans are Snow and Petrelli trans from, I am told PT Boats. They are model 3865 and we have no manuals on them. Does any one know were we can get copies of the manuals. Here is some info on the Yacht.
Commissioned by George Whittell, in 1919, especially for Lake Tahoe while he was building his fabulous estate there, the Thunderbird was designed by famed naval architect John L. Hacker and built by the Huskin Boat works in Detroit. Enamored by the lines of his D C-2 aircraft, also named the Thunderbird, the eccentric millionaire requested that the hull and cockpit of his new speedboat resemble the fuselage of his personal airplane. Fashioned of triple-planked mahogany and brushed stainless steel the Yacht would enable Whittell to tour Lake Tahoe with speed and style. Outfitted originally with twin 550 hp Kermath engines, the vessel was capable of 60 knots. Suspended by slings in the boathouse for over 10 years, the boat was rescued by gaming and auto collector William. F. Harrah, who purchased it from Whittell shortly before his death, in 1969. Harrah had it transported to his Automobile Collection restoration shop in Reno where it was eventually refurbished. His workman added a matching, brushed stainless steel flying bridge and replaced the original engines with two V-12 Allison V-1710 aircraft engines developing 1100 hp each. The Gibb family, purchased the boat and owned it until 2007 when the present owners, Foundation 36 acquired it. The Yacht will be docked in its original boat house at Thunderbird lodge. Hello I have a 1964 Owens with a 327.} I think the trans might be bad but don't know what kind it is. Someone told me a Paragon, but looking at pics it looks like a Borg Warner? Does anyone know? And if you have one for sale, I am interested, The boat just won't go after passing the wake zone, like something is holding it back, a diver is going down to clean in a week, is there some sort of clutch in this tranny? It does go forward and in reverse, I had an old timer tell me if it does that it ain't broke! Any help would be great from anyone...

Hi,
I have an old yacht with a GMC 2-71 with a Snow Nabstedt 3735 or 3738. I have some literature about this reduction gear. It may be very similar to yours. If you would like I'll send you a copy of what I have. It's of the same vintage, it was installed by the US Navy during WWII for her use as a patrol craft. I've seen the Thunderbird at the Lake Tahoe show at Carniellian Bay years ago. Is the rumor true that the engines are not counterrotating and must be fed throttle slowly due to the massive torque creating handling problems if throttled up too fast??
Good luck,
David
