Joey,

The recent Atlantic engines were painted gray, and I think that they were always gray from the factory... but I believe that a lot of them were painted red by their owners. Maybe someone else can correct me on this... you do see a lot of Atlantic engines painted red.

In Stan Grayson's Old Marine Engines he discusses engine finishing in general and says:

Quote:

Gray, black, red, and blue were commonly used colors. Brown and green were also popular, although the latter was seldom seen in Newfoundland, where it was considered to bring bad luck to a boat. French fishermen along the St. Lawrence discovered that engines painted entirely with red lead would change shades if running too hot. This signaled that it was time to investigate the water pump. For this reason, no matter what color a manufacturer painted his engines, the St. Lawrence fishermen promptly covered them with red lead.

Hope that helps....

Regards,
Andrew
