Hello -

I'm looking at a 1 cyl Bridgeport marine engine that a gentleman I know has for sale, has a Schebler carb. He's not local so I cannot inspect the engine. He says that it's in great shape, no repairs, but that the main bearings have a bit of slop that needs to be taken up. Do Bridgeport engines have shimmed mains like hit/miss engines, or am I looking at pouring babbitt for new mains? From what I've read, air leaking into loose bearings will lean out the air/fuel mix and cause the engine to run rough, correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks in advance for your help.

Chris

Pouring two stroke babbit bearings is a job for a very experience amatuer to say the least. If there is any leakage past the bearings you are in a heap of trouble starting and keeping it running in my opinion. With no grease in the bearing lift the flywheel up and down and see how much if any play you can feel. Any play is too much. Dont know what model Bridgeport we are talking about with regard to babbit or babbit with bronze shells.
