Hello, new to the board. I recently came into posession of a 30' double ender with a two cylinder easthope engine. It turns over but doesn't want to start. Apparently it has been sitting for 3 years. I am in seattle and would like to have someone knowlegeable give me their opinion on my situation. I have a serial # from the engine. I will post that later if that is helpful. Thanks in advance.

This was Dan. L.'s boat? You should be able to find some help in the Seattle area. There a quite a few old engine collectors down there. It's either fuel, spark or air basically. Tell us more about it: magneto, battery, Cuno timer, what has it got on it? What kind of carb? Carb could be stuck. Did you change the gas? Take off the side plates and check the crank case for oil/water.

If you're not the type who likes to tinker or are not mechanically inclined, this is not the engine/boat for you.

Hello Seabird....I know a thing or two about Easthopes....post the serial number and I'll send you some history. Robert is right about some in his post but don't let him scare you off. Your engine is simplicity itself. If it is the boat that Robert mentions the s/n of your Easthope is UA4583. It is a 10-14HP and according to my records it is single ignition using an Auto-Lite timer and 12v coil. The engine assembly was started on May 8, 1944 and finished May 16, 1944. On May 30, 1944 the engine was sold to A.B.C. Packing Co. at the Good Hope Cannery for a fishing boat owned by Henery MacDonald of Nanaimo, B.C. Invoice number A4982...$593.71. Confirm this is your engine and don't use a bar in the flywheel to start the engine until you are familiar with spark advance and retard and the reason you do this...Joe H

There you go...better yet, don't use a bar at all, use a wooden dowel. If it sticks in the Johnson Bar hole when you're trying to start there's less chance of tearing a hole in the bottom out of the boat. And no, I'm not trying to scare you off! :-)

If you haven't done so already you should use the search link on the top of this page and search this board for "easthope", there are quite a few existing posts and pictures of easthope engines and boats with easthope power...

Hope you will post a few pictures and further info here.

Let me know if you need help posting pictures.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the responses. This boat did belong to Dan L. I want to sell the easthope and repower with a diesel. Hope that isn't a sacriligious thing too admit round here. I am planning to put the boat on the hard in March and will be doing some wheelhouse modification repair that would allow the engine to be lifted out intact at that time. Anyone know of any interested parties? Thew engine turns over very easily and I would be willing to show it almost any time. Thanks again
