I sent a drawing of the manifold to Richard, he should post it soon. That's a nice early engine, first 4hp I've seen with a bolt on manifold. I own and have seen several other 2 1/2, 5 and 6hp like this. Does it have a serial #, if no tag it should be stamped on front of the crank. Is the water pump strap offset or straight?

jb I took a look at the engine tonight and the serial number on the tag is 4088 and it does have a offset pump rod. I also have a 2 1\2 horse serial number 2223 but it has two bolts that hold the exhaust manifold on. 4hp motorgo

On the L-A engines the first number indicated the HP, the rest was consecutive numbers. The 4hp would be the 88th in that series, probably a model 24. The 2 1/2 would be # 223. Model 24 was the 2 1/2 & 4hp singles, model 68 was the 6 & 8hp twins. The very early L-A engines didn't use this numbering system. I don't know if L-A and Motorgo shared serial numbers.

I have a Motorgo Marine Engine no.41037 HP-4;I know I'm missing the carb. but not sure what else. I'm a antique motorcycle person (1940 Indian 4 cyl.) The engine just looked interesting to me so I bought it. What can any one tell me about it? Is it a desirable motor or an orphan? Is it worth peanuts or what- I'm scared to say what I paid for it; if it's a orphan and not very desireable? Thanks for any info, Paul Ulrich

Does it look like the engine at the top of this post? Sears sold engines under the Motorgo name, used different mfg. The engines in this post are Lockwood Ash. Lockwood Ash also made a 4 cycle 4 HP. The 2 stroke L-A 4hp is a good engine, very durable, powerful, and easy to run. They were probably the most plentiful, the 2 1/2 and 6hp are more in demand because of their smaller size. If you need parts we have a lot of the exterior parts recast.

Yes it looks to be the same as the one at top of this post. I am interested in selling this one. I will try to get a couple of pics and post them. I may need a week or so to get pics posted as I'm not a expert on computers and rely on my neighbor and daughter to help me wade thru computer issues. Do you know any one interested in this motor. Better to sell as is or get parts and get it running? Are there any other photos available to identify any other missing parts besides the carb.?; oh looks like I'm also missing what looks to be a cover on the points advance/retard mechanism. Thanks, Paul Ulrich , email address- [email protected] ; I live in Fort Wayne, IN

One of the local guys, Bob L. made a tool to press the covers, Jamie H. has the disc etched and presses them out, early ones had some wrinkes, they're getting better. Here's one of the early L-A covers, he should have a Motorgo available.
