Hello all.. I just acquired a Stanley single cylinder model 2 1/2 as the name plate states.. Its quite complete as well as having a drive shaft, shift mechanism and reversing pitch propeller. Although , the piston is "quite seized" with rust. Just looking for some random thoughts and any info any of you may have.
-- wondering as to age -- has "number 328" on the tag also
-- what does anyone suggest as a method to free it up ??
-- There is a crack in the top of the head in the water jacket. What is the preferred method to repair cracks such as this ?? I've had modern blocks repaired with a cold stitch type method as welding is assumed to be a big mistake.
-- there is an "old crack repair" on the side of the water jacket that was repaired with what appears to be about 2 lbs of brazing material. Should I leave this as-is or delve into repairing that in a different method?
-- The person i obtained it from said when it was harvested out of a boat carcass 30 years ago, it also had a fuel tank with an Emmons emblem on it, but that has since been lost. I've read of a Stanley/ Emmons connection but it is still unclear.
-- Approximately what size boat would have this been used in ?? I'm thinking some sort of launch..
Sorry for the long post, but if any of you out there have any info, it would be greatly appreciated.. thanks..

The Stanley Company of boston, mass began mfging marine engines about 1900, they were recognizable by their wide rimed very heavy flywheel and for just being a solid well built marine engine. two stoke engs some had thin hot heads- others a much thicker wet head, many of the Stanleys were run on kerosene !

By 1908 The Stanley Co. was also mfging The Toquet engine for the company of the same name.

Gerry Emmons was a turn of the century boat bulder in Massachusetts and used Stanley engs in his boats, emmons tags were on many of the engs in his boats.

By 1921 the Stanley company was bought out by The Sutter Brothers Co. of new York city .

Does your engine look like this one ?
