Hello to all,
I am looking for an engine manufacturer that makes a new old-style engine, perhaps with a reversing gear. I am a boatbuilder / small manufacturer. One of my new designs is a launch that will require a 2-5 hp engine. Unfortunantly a restored antique is not a good idea because of the need for repeatability.
Sincerely,
Andrew Kelly

Not sure of where you are, US presumably. In Australia, Blaxland/Chapman and Simplex I believe are still making new engines. The BC is 2 stroke and the Simplex is 4 stroke, larger & heavier than BC, but smoother & quieter.

There contacts can be found using internet or white/yellow pages search.

Regards

Andrew in Florida (I think),

I tried responding to your email but (I think) my company's prudish email filter won't let me send it to your very rude-sounding address.

Try sending me another address and I will send a few contacts.

Gardners are still used all over the 2nd and 3rd Worlds, which is why we see ads like this from people in those regions looking for them.

Folks,

The name is even given incorrectly on their web site...should have been Lister-Petter...with 2 Ts.

I can't remember if this is the high quality copy company or one of the poorer ones. There are several companies doing this now for the Listers. Generally they are called "Listeroids".

In any event, these will run on straight vegetable oil without any problems. Soybean oil, rapeseed oil, etc. Cheaper than diesel fuel even if you buy it in a grocery store one gallon at a time!

Waste soybean oil from deep fryers ( fast food restaurants ) can be filtered quite easily and run directly in these engines. In fact, Diesel designed his engines to run on farm produced fuel at the outset...rapeseed oil in those days. This was his whole philosophy on helping the farmer. Very progressive ideas in the 1890s.

Chiming in again,

I found the "preferred" ( high quality ) manufacturer of these Listeroids:

Anyone considering purchasing a "Listeroid" as the Indian-made copies are commonly known, should visit www.listerengineforum.com There are many quality control problems in Indian manufacturing and most of these engines require complete stripping and cleaning to remove casting sand etc. as well as the proper finishing and fitting of parts etc. before they are useable/reliable.

Folks,

Perhaps a better place is:

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/Lister_CSOG/

The owner of this group is Ken Boak and he is a friend of mine in the UK. Lots of activity over there with these engines. He is the one who advocates the poweranand.com Listeroids. He has no stake in them other than he has seen most of the brands first hand or has close friends who have.

Addtionally, I'm looking for a piston for a 5 Hp. Atlantic. My ad is in the Classified section. Does anyone have a line on one of these pistons? Needed for a winter project.

I'm always pleasantly surprised at the depth of knowledge of this group.

Regards,

Archibald

Considering how slow the server is at the Lister Engine Forum, that Yahoo group may well be a better place!

From the testimony of one of the Indian engine builders, it seems all or almost all of them, simply buy castings from one or more of the numerous foundries in Rajkot and then machine and fit the parts themselves. Much like Taiwanese lathes where the headstock might be from a 'good' foundry and the tailstock from a 'bad' foundry, with predictable results! There are also innumerable outfits that pose as manufacturers of engines or parts when they are merely re-badging and re-selling engines/parts made by others.

You could try L.I.F.E. for Atlantic parts, but I'm guessing they have become tired of tire-kickers and simply don't want to bother with Atlantic engine parts, except when someone actually shows up on the doorstep. I did talk to someone there on the phone a few years ago and they had a stock of unmachined(?) spares then, but the knowledge is probably not there anymore to ID most of them.

Robert,

Yes, agreed. However, the power.anand.com stuff seems to pass inspection. I believe the crankcases are painted white inside.

Did you notice the glass of water they placed on top of the valve cover in one of the video clips? At least this thing is not shaking itself to death!

John,
Yes, the video was interesting. Paint can cover a multitude of sins, casting sand being one of them. I have no experience of Power.Anand so cannot comment on their engines, but they do seem to get the best reviews IIRC.

Are you after an aluminum or iron piston and have you posted a wanted ad on this site?

Robert,

Yes, I have posted an ad on this site, but some time ago.

The bad piston is aluminum, but if there is a cast iron alternative that would work I would be interested in that, too. ( 5 Hp. Atlantic )

Where are you located?
