Tom,

There was a post on this board about a year ago (has the board been up in this format that long...!). You can find it from the search function on the left or this link.

Also I think that Peter Hunn had asked questions here or on the old board about Watertown some time ago.

I also found some photos in my files of a restored two cylinder 6HP Watertown at the Clayton NY show some years ago. My notes say it is serial number 164 and belonged to Cal Shaad. You could probably get contact information for him from the ACBS directory.

Regards,
Andrew

Took these pics at Clayton Museum.
Tag says "Smith Electrical Engineering Co.
Maker of High Grade Marines Engines
Watertown N.Y.
The engine is undoubtedly a Watertown.
Stan Grayson in his books appendix lists this
co. and says that their trade name was "BOYNTON"

Smith1

Smith2

Found this in a 1916 publication ?

Thanks for all the info. Damn!! I once owned a small engine with a "shop stamped" brass tag marked for the Smith Electric co of Watertown.
I sold it to a midwest collector. It was stuck as I recall. I just spent an hour trying to just determine what year it was so I could look for the pictures. (around 1992) I'll post when I find.

My Watertown is missing the cast iron exhaust and intake manifold. From the pictures provided I believe I could fabricate one from steel plate and grind it to shape.

Harold Johnson in Watertown NY 315-788-9133 lists a 1 cyl 5HP Watertown in his collection in the 2002 ACBS directory. I believe the Watertown Times newspaper did a story on the company some time ago. Perhaps Harold Johnson has a copy of this information.

Tom: Seems that by 1915 Watertown was under the new successors Gillespie-BOYNTON, your engine has the oil mixing instruction tag which were showing up on engines by 1912 or so, so I would guess that your Watertown was made in those years 1912-1914. This is open for additional info or opinions. Where Smith Electrical Co fits into
this cronologically or historically is yet to be determined.

That would match up with the 1908 adv. scann showing no oiling instruction tag but having drip
oilers.

Smith Electric picture to follow. It's actually a picture of a polaroid from 1990 so the quality is not so good.

tag and it also is not a Watertown and is not the same as the engine above ??
