Hi!

I just purchased a like new 1959 Fastwin Evinrude. I looks like it might have been used a couple of times in the past 50 years. Paint all in tact and great condition no scratches or wear marks - runs great. I paid 400.00 can anyone tell me if this is an ok price, did I pay too much? and, what is the fuel pre mix ratio. I am mechanically minded but have only owned one outboard prior to this 25 years ago and know little about outboards. thanks for your help!!

400 sounds ok for what you got.
Fuel mix is 1 qt of 30w to 6 gallons of gas.
Do NOT use new synthetic oil or try to run this engine at 50 to 1 oil mix. Also it will be worth your while to take off the recoil starter and then the small cover in the flywheel. If the coils have any cracks at all they DO need to be replaced. They are available from NAPA auto parts.
Hope this helps

Make sure the throttle is going back to idle all the way.
There is a vertical link on the side of the powerhead that limits shift functions at certain throttle openings
Hope this helps

The lower units should be the same as long as both are short shaft or both are long shaft.
Hope this helps

Don't know if your still looking, I am out in Idaho and just got two of these late 1950's fastwin 18's for free. I am thinking about sending them out for scrap but both have good lower units. One would run fine but needs a shift lever, not sure I want to bother locating one.
