Bill- Thanks for this post and the photo of the tag. The engine in the above article is 1905 and a different design than the engine in your post,I have very little info on Minnesota Power and Boat Co. but before 1906 the engine in the article was the only engine photo i've seen, in 1906 I found reference to the Schmidt engines and a Schmidt Harsman Company in Ilinois that advertised their engines in the Minnesota Boat and Power Co's catalog in 1906 ? leaves some mystery as to what Minnesota Boat and Power Co.really was-- a boat mfg that outsourced its engines or also an engine mfgr that used different engine designs ?

Thanks to liking the Stillwater motor more, the very nice collector who owned it only had room for one little boat motor in his rec room, and let me have the following Red Wing Boat Mfg. Co. Sn 130 to put in my living room. I think they would look very nice together someday.

Bill

Founded at the turn of the century "Trautner & Gardiner" established the marine engine mfg Co.that was eventually to become The Red Wing Boat Mfg. Co and in turn by about 1911 to become
The Red Wing Motor Co. Your engine posted above with the Red Wing Boat Mfgr Co. tag is a very old design and maybe the initial engine that Trautner started with ?? I have been looking for info on this very early history, has anyone seen a Trautner Gardiner engine ??

If I get the time, I will probably update the Red Wing section for this site. As I remember, that is the second earliest serial number I have seen, unfortunately, I did not own a digital camera when I saw the other one, and I did not get pictures. I am pretty sure Red Wing started at number 100, so this should be the 30th one built in Red Wing. They built around 1500 two cycles. If anyone ever has an early catalog, with the two cycles in it, I would really like to buy one. Here is a picture of my early T head, SN 717 which I believe is the first model of 4 cycle Red Wing produced.

January & February 1911 'Red Wing Motor Co." ads say Formerly "Red Wing Boat Mfg co."

These three ads were the only ones used in 1911 Motor Boat although they had an ad in every month.

Richard,
Red Wing changed it's name again in 1953 to Red Wing Motor and Mfg. Company, and then in 1955 to Red Wing Marine Corporation. Do you have any ads that show these changes?
