Easthope Marine Engines 1956 Catalog

I have borrowed and scanned a 1956 Easthope Engines catalog into a Word.doc file.

Anyone interested in Easthopes, please get in touch with me. I am looking for a 5/7 for a friend.

Yo umbie......your 15-18 hp Easthope was completed on November 9th 1938. The engine fitter was none other than Peck Easthope himself. First owner was J.S. Carpenter of Masset, B.C. (Queen Charlotte Islands) ..... invoice number 3912 dated Nov. 1938 in the amount of $765.40. The serial number on the clutch which is the Easthope number 3 (largest) is C3479. The gent who made the clutch was A. Price.
Value? need more info....is the engine complete? Is it cracked etc.....Joe

Ben, your engine is a new style 8-14hp. The serial number is denoted as 81:5698. It was made (completed) July 1. 1981 and sold to a David Rimmer on July 10, 1981. The bore is 3.88 and pistons and rings are available. The carb was probably a small side draft Zenith and the distributor is an Auto-Lite timer using a regular 12v coil. The engine was built by Bill Easthope, the last of the Easthope engine fitters. Bill is the great grandson of the founder Earnest Easthope who came to Canada from England in 1898. For parts and such you can email me at [email protected]

F. Mate,

If you don't get a response from him here, you should email Joe Holmes directly. See his email in the post abover yours. He has a lot of info on Easthope.

I have an Easthope catalog... no date (but I think it may be as recent as the 1950's) which shows the smallest engine as a single cylinder 4-6 HP. 3-7/8" bore x 5" stroke, approx weight 240 lbs.

Also use the search function at the top of this page and search "easthope" for a list of previous discussions.

If you are looking for general background information on old style inboard engines... you might want Stan Grayson's book.

Let us know when your book comes out so we can look for it...

I just found this sight, looks like the place to be for info I might need. What I have here is the four cyl. East hope, years ago Mr. Holmes prvided me with the build info on this engine. The engine is the 36-45 built in oct 1951.I rolled it out the other day to give it a run in preperation to drain the old oil. There is one dipstick for oil level, but I cant find a single drain plug for the gear end or the crankcase.I understand there are not many of these engines around, but maybe someone knows the procedure. Thanks for your considerations on the matter. DAVE

I am a volunteer at the Long Island Maritime Museum.
We have been restoring an Easthope, one cylinder, 6 HP engine, SN 815703. Can anyone tell me what spark plug we should use? There is some information around about some versions utilizing a combination starter-generator. If anyone knows anything about that I would appreciate any information available

Hello Frank, your Easthope is actually a 4-6 HP and is one of the last built. Sold originally to Atlantic Boat Works in Camden Maine Nov. 1981. The engine was built(completed) Oct. 1st 1981. The updates (improvements) incuded changing to a rotary Japsco water pump instead of the piston pumps that were part of the charm of the Easthope. Why muck about with a starter or generator. These little beauties represent an era which embrassed the KISS principle. To start just roll the flywheel over compression and away she goes....you have adjusted the spark to fire just past TDC of course. The spark plug would be a 1/2" pipe thread style...same as in the model "T".

Hello Frank Fletcher......I have looked up your engine and find there is no 4 hp Easthope engine with that serial number. Is it possible that the s/n is 49:5418? There is an engine with the numbers 5118 but the prefix is YA. YA5118 is a 2 cylinder 10-14hp built in 1947. Your engine would have been built in 1949. Let me know...Joe

Barbara, the serial number you give is not an Easthope engine number. Where on the engine did you take the number from? If it is from the brass engine tag the serial number will be on the bottom row where there are three boxed info areas, the serial number is in the last box to the right................Joe

Hello Barbara, I found your engine. It is quite old. To explain the numbers; yes the first box is the HP. The second box is RPM and is 600 and the third box is the s/n 509. Your engine was built September 15, 1922. I will e-mail you as well.............Joe

Hello Joe;
Do you have a record of a 7 h.p. heavy duty being sold to my Grandfather, Mat Riksman of Sointula B.C., probably some time during the 30's.
I began my fishing career with this engine in 1951 with my grandfather's boat, he had retired back in 47 I believe. This was a great engine as I always knew what cylinder was acting up.

Hello Gary, I went through the records and your grandfather's name does not show up. Many engines were sold to the Sointula co-op store who were agents for Easthope. If your grandfather was the first owner of the engine and he bought it from the co-op perhaps the co-op would have a record. I cannot do much more without the serial number ...sorry.....Joe

What is the number 1 plug wire and what is the number two (top or bottom looking at it as mounted) What are the two studs on either side of the mag for - ground to stop it? Thank you. Chummy

Hi Chummy, is the magneto on the engine and timed? If so then the mag wire that fires the number one cylinder plug when it is on compression stroke is the number one. Confirm by checking that the other wire fires number 2 cylinder at its power stroke. Take all the plugs out and ground them and roll the engine over and watch......

Joe, I recently bought a 1939 Francis Fredette troller; Pescawa. She has a Easthope winch on her and I would guess she had a Easthope engine when Frank finished her. Can you verify that and let me know the h.p.?

Hello David, when you say an Easthope winch I assume you mean trolling gurdies which they made a lot of. It does not necessarily mean the boat had an Easthope engine. The records do not mention the "Pescawa" so it is not possible to answer your enquiry. Bear in mind that the sales records show the original purchaser which was often a fish company or the builder and in a few cases it was mentioned "installed in (vessel name)." It does not mean that the original engine was not an Easthope, just can't tell with the information provided..................Joe

Joe,

Thanks for the info. Too bad nothing was found under Fredette but it was a bit of a long shot. However, back to my winch.. This is actually an anchor winch. Do you know where I might find some info on it? I’ve seen quite a few old trollers with these winches.

And obviously you have some great info on old boats in the Vancouver area. I’m trying to research as much as possible about Frank Fredette and in particular my Pescawa. The Vancouver Maritime Museum was fantastic, got tons of good info there. But do you have any idea on the Fredette family and if they have kept old records or photos?

I hope I can be of help to others in getting their Easthope running. They are great engines and like Joe says, just give the flywheel a flip and away they go.

Can anyone help me locate a 3 cylinder distributor (timer) cap for my 30-40hp Easthope...The Easthope has a Auto-Lite distributor with IGW4052 7E stamped on the distributor housing...Easthope cast their own engine blocks and other main parts but autolite made the timers...does anyone know of a interchange that might be the same cap?????

Just a note to those looking for information on original engines in old fishing boats built in BC etc.

"Harbour & Shipping" magazine used to publish in I believe an issue in May of each year, a summary of the boats built in BC, by who and for whom, with their engines and hp etc. A very useful resource - if you can find it!

Capt. Howson
To Captain Howson, I finally tracked down the timer part number for you. I was sure I had one somewhere and found it today. The box is labeled "Original AUTO-LITE SERVICE PART".
Part Number is IGW 1084. This is a timer cap for a three cylinder. It is possible that this part is now made by someone else but a good parts guy can cross reference it.....Joe

So Capt. Howson, did you find a distributor cap yet?

If not, you could check in Hemmings Motor News for a supplier of NOS parts.

Would a six cylinder cap work, just using every second point?

Kudos for keeping the old engine going BTW.

Robert and company I found a 6 cylinder cap that fits and appears that it will do the job....the cap I found was for the 6 cylinder Auburn 1934-1936 that used the same distributor, also the following will work if you find yourself needing a cap for the 3 cylinder Easthope..1942-47 hudson, 1940 packard 6, hupmobile 1935-36, Lafayette 1934-36 6 cylinder..Nash 1946-47, Reo 1935-36, Studebaker 1933-46 6 cylinder, Terreplane 1934-38 or just get a hold of me I now have 10 caps..according to Joe H. I probably have the last operational 3 cylinder in a boat and working..I'm buying another in the crate easthope 3 cylinder saturday..never been started, the net is amazing with what you can find....good old engines to all of us, and those that love to hear and see them run..

Engine 51:5578 was built May 22 1951 and sold to Oscar Elm in Lund, BC. Lund is on the mainland opposite Savary Island. The engine record shows it to have dual ignition...Autolite timer and Bosch magneto. The magnetos were often 6 cylinder mags so you used every other hole in the distributer. Looking at the flywheel the first cylinder is No. 1. Firing order is 132. Valve timing is the same for all Easthope engines. The engne was delivered with a starter, generator GEG 4820-1; regulator VRP 4104-B and had a "slow down" installed. The purpose of the slowdown was to give the engine better idling characteristics for trolling etc. Basically the slow down lever changed the geometry of the intake valve lifter so that the intake valve movement was adjustable ie. less opening less fuel and air. Combined with the throttle was supposed to give better idle. It was best when the carbs were basic such as the Schebler. How's the crabbing?.......... Joe

Depends on condition Tom, and originality, but a fully restored example with a new head and cylinder sold for about $1900. US more than five years ago on eBay. If you have some photos of your engine you could post them here.

Greg, 20hp 750 revs s/n RA3949 is a 1941 3 cylinder 20 hp.
How bad is it? I see by your next post you want another one. I have a two and a three cylinder available. They are complete but apart. By the way engine RA3948 is a two cal. 10 hp

Considering the cylinder jackets were a good half inch thick on the larger Easthopes I have seen, I wouldn't write that engine off necessarily, Mt. Rainier Greg. Even split there is often plenty of 'meat' there to make a repair on.

No such thing Dave. Easthope put out catalogs but never a manual. They did put out information which covered clearances, tolerances, timing etc. What two cylinder do you have, 10-14 or 15-18 and do you have the serial number?

How complete was the engine Greg? Any chance of a few photos? There are people who want to save these...
