And that's what makes J.B. so Special his straight out mechanical inquisitiveness "I wonder if any of my motors "mote" ? since seeing this ad several yrs ago I ( assumed that to mote was like to motor or run or rotate like a motor) not exactly so !
Mote comes from a very old english word "Motan" it was used by the 1300's English author and poet Chaucer as "So mote it be", later english translation "So May it be". with newer translations and a bit of germanic infusion it tends to mean "it can" or "has the power to" that would seem to allude to the Known potential of the object to do what it is claimed or designed to do ? In this case The Bridgeport Marine Engine "can" or "has the power to" propell your boat with the qualities claimed !

By the definition above if you got down the water way with this one without using oars -You'd have to say it "MOTES"

Good morning Richard, Yes that is the photo. The engine on the left side, is it a vertical Evenrude two cycle. the photo is not that clear.I picked up a Evinrude at a vintage car swap meet this past spring. It dose run but is missing the muffler. I expect that it maybe some what on the rare side, or at least not a serviver, as the only means of cooling it is go fast to produce air flow through the fins. I have done some research but found nothing. Can you help.

Back last year at an outboard motor show and swap meet I saw a Evinrude air cooled motor, prop shaft and prop. If I happen to run into Dennis Evinrude (Grandson) at this years swap meet I'll ask him about this. Also look to see if the guy brought that motor to the swap meet.

The block, & ign system look Evinrude
The cylinder does not. The mixer shown was used on the rowboat motors, but I have never seen it on a inboard motor. The cylinder color not matching the rest, brings questons to mind. In any event its very interesting, and thanks for forwarding and posting the pictures
if it ever comes on the market let me know

A big thank you to you Richard for posting the photos. Roger the color on the crank case is the same as the old Evirude out board engines. As to the jug being a differant color. I ran the engine briefly and heats up real quick as there is no means to cool (ie) fan or? I`ll likely hang on to it for a bit longer until I find out some more of its history. I purchased this engine from a fellow that comes to Abbotsford in the spring from Washington state to sell at a vintage car swap meet. After he sold me the engine he was not pleased with himself for selling it when I told him that it was a Evinrude. And thats an other story.

This could be a experimental motor they built but never put in production. Motors like that turn upnow and then. I believe Evinrude came out with the flywheel magneto in 1913 so this would fall then or after. The rowboat motors were sold into 1920s using this mixer.

The only piece that is damaged is the tab on top of the mixer. Other then that is has great compression. It didn`t look like the photos when I got it. I spent about 8 hours cleaning, trying to save the pateena but still look good. Thanks to you all for the info.

Years ago I was at a swap meet, and a man had a Waterman, or some other very early manufacture name brand engine that was set up as a stationary. Every other part on it was newly painted a different color, so I and a few other guys thought it was a homemade from parts engine. It wasn't cheap enough for me to take a chance on it. Later, BJ Pawlaczyk bought it, and then he showed me a picture of it in a catalog he had. I really wish I had gotten to it first, so I could make BJ trade me something good.

In my youth I remember using parts from any engine I could make fit. Part were plentiful, money was not. I had some Frankenstein engines in those days, I still wonder if this wasn't somebodys project engine. I do not see any head bolts, so I guess the head is part of the cylinder

Richard the reason I thought the left hand engine in your photo may be related to the engine I have is the fact that some where I did see a photo of an other Evinrude & it did have a muffler on the exhaust outlet.Your engine dose appear to have something on the right side of the engine that looks simular to a muffler as I can recall. All I remember for sure is that looked like a disc shape and was about 1- 1/2 to 2 inch. thick.

many of the small air cooled engine had a belt driven fan, are the any signs of mounting surfaces? for belt drives? even in the event that it did the fins going cross ways seems out of place. One more note, I know after market cylinders were made for these as I have one. Mine is water cooled though. I sure would like to see the bottom of the cylinder and mateing surface on the block. The passage on the cylinder doesnt seem to continue on to the lower block

Took a close look at the flange and came up with CO81070 OR CC81072. I did not want to disturb the paint, so it is the best I can do. What do you all think?

Tonight I had a look at this gem and have you noticed that there is a brass bushing on the out put side of the crank. Also there is a indent in the crank about were the water pump cam is located. I also did notice that their is two small center punch marks, one on the base of the jug& the other directly below on the base.
