Richard
I recently picked up a 10 hp 2 cylinder Wonder. The serial no. is 2404, so it is later than Doug's. It also has the intake and exhaust on the same side of the engine. Another feature is it has a flyball govenor on the timer shaft. I will post pictures when I get a chance.

Keith

This is my 10 Hp Wonder serial 3156 later than yours, If we compare these engines with some of the info I already have, may be able to figure out what years they were made.

Bruce do you have a Cornwell or a Wonder ??

Any other wonder engines or photos available ?

Keith

Thats a cool old engine and I believe original in its stationary form. R.M.Cornwell was a mfgr of electrical generators, dynamos, pumps, saws etc, a few marine engs. His early advertising was not in marine publications, so probably in electrical, stationary pump ads ? which i don't have. I have a 1905-06 R.M.Cornwell catalog but not much from 1907-09.
Am working at posting photos here with some sense of accuracy, soon!
Your engine tag and Dougs above are the same, but different than on mine. ?

So Far only 5 serial Numbers available !

1.Doug K------------538
2.Keith B------------2404
3.Article above------2592
4.Richard D----------3156
5.Article above------3366

This has become quite a thread on "Wonder". The following photos were in my files, but I don't recall where there came from.

1
2

I also have a couple pictures of what was represented to be a "Wonder Engine made in Canada". It is a single cylinder four cycle vertical engine on a stationary base and doesn't look like any of the engines show above. Was there another Wonder Engine Company in Canada? I could post the pictures here if you guys want, but I hate to cloud the issue. I could also just email them to Richard, Bruce, Kieth, or anyone else that might want the evaluate it.

Thanks Andrew !

It just dawned on me that I took the ABM photo above ( silver blue twin) and had a side shot of it also- shows the down looped intake manifold like in the 1909 ad above- Same as engine above with flywheel off!

Richard. I think my R M Cornwell was the thermo-syphon tank cooled model you show. The cylinder has the same base style as the "rusty" twin that Andrew posted.I won't see the engine until next week as I'm headed for Grand Rapids MI. tomorrow. It has a "U-tube intake identical to a small single Wonder owned by Donn Booth in Cortland NY. I was on Tallman Street this week-no evidence of a building but the Brennan Engine Company billboard size sign is still very legable on their former building on Water St. I'm still learning the digital camera/ picture posting skills- will try to speed up my learning curve..Hope your all bolted down for Wilma this weekend..

Good stuff, practice your skills by posting photos here of some of that marine iron you have!
good luck with it- Thanks for input Here.

Keith

This one looks like the single version of the 1909 twin in ad above, the 1130 serial number would also put it about 1909 !
Whats the Hp on the tag can't quite make it out?

The Antique Boat Museum's Wonder is serial number 2902. Our accession records put a date of 1907 on it but the accuracy of that date is questionable.

Thanks for the serial number, the engine ( silver blue) above looks to be in the 1908-1910 range although the serial number is high, is this the only Wonder engine in ABM ??

Interesting discussion. Why do some heads seem much thinner than others? Are some actually hot heads and the water outlet simply passes through and out or are the heads thicker and recessed into the top of the cylinder to get increased thickness to permit hollow water passages? Bobs almost looks like it could have been made up after the old head failed. I wonder if there are any others like Bob's. No pun intended.

I have a Wonder Engine, it is the one with the
pics that they don't know where they came from.
I removed the plugs and put oil in the cylinders about 8 years ago.
Now I am retired and would like to restore the engine. The lower half came off and so did the heads, both easy. but the pistons are seized up very good. I used bees wax and heat from two small torches. I don't know David Copperfield
and I don't have a magic wand.

How can I free up the pistons???????

it has been used in freshwater in michigan,
the water jackets look very good, the engine looks good.

I find a piece of pipe, machine if necessary to fit behind the piston, insall in the press and apply pressure. If it doesn't move with a pressure I'm comfortable with, I apply heat to the cylinder while in the press. Usually it moves with just a slight amount of heat.

Raise the roof or Move the Piston.

I used a 6 ton jack, two torches and bees wax.
the pistons pushed out hard.
Thanks JB_CASTAGNOS YOUR TIP, WORKED GREAT
The pistons and cylinders look very good.
this is the only way I could press out the pistons.
