I'd very much like to see a picture of a plan view. Is there a piston and conrod in there somewhere?

Look like a very over-square cylinder design...

The over square was probably to reduce the overall height of the engine. The lower shaft on the Dirigo engine above was an advantage, why would you want to invert and engine and make the shaft higher? I think the answer is because it burns paraffin, kerosene to us. We've all seen the accumulation of gas and oil in the base on these old engines, paraffin doesn't vaporize like gasolene and would soon have the crankcase full. Inverting the engine made it self draining, Detroit got by this with the Middleditch injection system, injecting the kero right into the cylinder port instead of passing it through the crankcase. Seems to me they could have ran the transfer port inlet to the bottom of the crankcase to accomplish this instead of inverting the engine.
