I have a 4HP Clae bantam engine but the casting only shows "Ban am" and there is no "T" is this a mistake or was a specific engine made that did not have the "T" in the word BANTAM.
I am also seeking a block for this engine.
Photos of the casing and the block have been uploaded

Castings were made with wooded patterns. Brass letters and numbers were nailed to the wood. In this case, one letter fell of the pattern.
Misprinted postage stamps and bank notes are worth a lot of money, so, does this apply to engines?
I have some CLAE parts, so will have a look when I get a chance.

Eric - thank you - after corresponding with a Putt Putt Member, Sydney - he had a photo of his engine in TOMM Mag - he said my engine had a number of differences to his. Can supply more information if required.

There are 3 different Bantams that I know of. The first model was a 3hp with non-detachable head. Then came the 3 and 4hp sizes with a round cylinder block and detachable head. The 3rd series had a square block.
A cylinder and head that I have is unfortunately for a 3hp.

Thank you Eric - yes, pity that your block is off a 3hp and not a 4hp.

Hi Guys.
I have a Clae 4hp Bantam detachable head 2stroke engine.I have it going and have recently put it in my 12ft carvel that I have recently restored. I would like to know
What the timing is for the magneto
What type of spark plug should I use
Is there an owners manual or anything about the motor.
Thanks
Max

Hi Max, yes i do have original copies of some information about Clae Bantams - firstly with regards to the magneto, the breaker points should be set at .012 - keep spark clean and adjusted to .30. Ignition timing is set so that breaker points are just breaking at 3/16 of an inch before top dead centre.
Original spark plug is KLG ML30 -- 18mm.

Hi Bill,
Just to clarify - that is 3/16" BTC on rise of piston not circumference of the flywheel.

Max i have written it as I have it, so like all - I do believe that that would be the distance on the flywheel - like everything try one way and then try the other and settle for what gives the best results.

no sorry I do not have anything on the computer and as you well know there is virtually nothing anywhere about these engines. this is the reason for submitting mine here - I have owned it for approx 15 years and only recently found this web site.
the only other thing that may be of interest is mix 1/4 pint of oil to one gallon of fuel - shake well before filling tank.

I think you will find the 3/16th is on the rise of
the piston,as I have a Bantam flywheel here with an
original timing mark set approximately at 2 7/8th
For those of you that are not bilingual with metric/
imperial measurements. 1/4 pint to 1 gal = 32:1
Cheers

Just thought I would refresh my enquiry on this engine _ I have just put another engine on site Motore Torino DNF 30 Diatto A.Clement.

The latter engine people on other Forums said it was a marine engine I did not so am putting it up for comment.

I would still like a block for the Clae Ban am 4hp engine - has anybody found an old one yet?

John oxley - thank you very much - as you can see it is my block that is in a terrible state - whilst Engineer at Forbes Meat Works I had it repaired, then put it away for years - think it was put in acid to clean, so when I looked at again it was split and gets worse by the day.
It is a shame that it is in that condition as I would love to recondition it and put along with my collection.
My email address is in the previous reply if you need to get back to me with photos and other relevant info. i live in Pomona on the Sunshine Coast.

Many thanks

thank you Neil for your help - sadly on getting the photos the engine on EBay has a square head, whereas mine has a round head. Both 4Hp.

Do hope johnoxley has the right block to suit a round head.

qwilkin-- no doubt you have read the above the Clae Bantam that was on EBay is a square head Clae bantam 4HP with attachments - maybe you could ring David 0408527995 - he may be able to help.

I am still seeking a block suitable for a round cylinder head.

Alas, I have this engine, but the block has rust wedged a piece out. Otherwise complete (and the name is also complete). Sorry for the delay - excessive workload gets in the way.

There are around here some good patternmakers and I've access to two first rate foundries in Sydney. I recently did a head and barrel for a 6" Frisco.

Thank you John - could you please send a photo or two to [email protected] - if it suits my round cylinder head - could you find out the cost of repair for me after Christmas plus what you want for it - I would like to put the engine together again.

Talk to you when you have time to mail - have a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I would like to thank all for looking and commenting on this article - I have been able to get a Clae bantam block from an add in the TOMM Magazine - a person in Inisfail Qld had one and so has sent it to me.

I am including a photo of the block and head

Hi seeing as i now have a block and am starting to put it all together (after 15 years) even to the extent of making a transporter I would like to hear from anybody that knows about alternative piston rings for this engine (or original) - I also appreciate a photo of the positioning of the fuel and cooling water tank - I take it a thermo cooling system should suffice or does one need a circulating system?

Thanks

I have now been able to get a block, head and rings for this engine.

After getting the above I have been putting all the parts together and find out that the cooling water is supplied by a small brass piston pump - this is operated from a connection piece mounted on the shaft at the back of the flywheel.

I am at the moment making up a bed plate and transporter so that sometime in the future I can take the engine to Historical Society meetings.

Clae. Model F. Australian Single pot Marine engine.
I have had this old clunker in the back yard for many years. I see the water jacket has split. Advice.. repairable or junk yard.?
I have the complete engine minus a gearbox. in fact I used it in the late 70's for a year or two in an old clinker. I would love to get it working as a mounted engine for display, I have photos of course but cant work out yet how to reduce them to 150kb for posting. happy to email whilst i get it worked out.thanks

How bad is the split? Was the engine cooled with salt water?

If no, then scratch out as much of the rust and crud as possible, and you might get away with using an epoxy treatment eg JB Weld.
You might also try the electrolysis technique for rust removal as a start to the repair.

If yes, then once it starts to split, then you are done.
The only hope is cooking out the salt water rust at 900 F for several hours. After that, if yu still have a cylinder in one piece, then welding the cast iron jacket back to some semblance of utility.
None of the above is simple or straightforward, but do-able but an enthusiastic owner.

miro

most camera software usually has some kind of "tool" menu in which there is a "resize" function. It may be a bit fiddly on the first one or two pictures until you get the hang of it

PS: If you do decide to do it up as a display motor,
I have a block here that has no rust cracks or bad
external corrosion .It has a repairable hole that
is between that water jacket and the exhaust outlet.
This was quite a common failing with this motor,as
the casting at this point was very thin.the bore
and the rest of it is quite good.
It was still running at the time of strip down.

Hi Doug - that certainly is a CLAE 'Fisherman' 5 or 6 - it says on the cast side plate which it is. Fixable for a display engine at least - cut and clean crack out with a cutting disc on an angle grinder then fill with jb weld or even sikaflex. Once restored and running keep engine full of water to prevent air (oxygen) getting at the iron. Not much good without a gearbox though - it shares the engine oil - I have restored a F10 and it's a lot of work but rewarding and rare engine to have.

Some F series motors did not have gear boxes, just a
large finger clutch assy. I Have 2 with clutches, 2 with gear box type face plates to mount box on.
You only had to change the face plate and add or remove the pinion on the crank.
