A friend gave me a 6hp Fisherman marine engine, made by Loane-Hiltz Eng'g Co. Baltimore MD. It's in rough shape but restorable. This engine is a 4 cycle, atmospheric intake with a sideshaft. The cam for the exhaust is a flat disc with two ramps. The rocker arm has a roller that can shift to the inner or outer arm, making it reversable. The engine was disassembled with some parts missing and some in rough shape. Anyone have any info or know of an engine I can get pictures of? Thanks, J.B.

I have a friend that has one in excellent condition will see if I can get him to help.
The engine is direct reversing by shifting the exhaust valve timing and I was surprised how will it worked. Will get back to you as I will have to write a letter as I have no esy way to get to him on the phone. He is only 40 miles away as the crow flies but about 200 by road. The Chesapeake Bay is in between us. Regards, Dick

Goodday J.B. Another thought is to contact the Baltimore main library & inquire if they have something on the Co. --Also Owls Head museum may have something as well --It sounds like a great find and a very interesting engine! "All the best" Larry Healey

J.B.

1913 index of marine eng makers lists "Loane-Hiltz
Engineering Co.as makers of 6hp "Fisherman"

This 1914 ad says " Loane-Trask Eng'g Co. Seems this would date your eng as not newer than 1913 ??

Loane Trask

1923 says "Loane Eng.g Co.

Loane 1923

I'll keep looking for other pics.

JB Does your engine have the glass port on the STBD side of the cylinder. The two Fishermen engines I have seen in this area both have a boss about 1 inch thick when you include the cast iron retainer of the 1/4" thick glass. Its about 8" high and 3" wide. The glass not covered by the retainer is about 6" high by 1-1/2" wide. Have not seen either engine in about ten years so forgive my shakey memory.
Allows you to see into the water jacket of the cylinder. Never seen anything like it on any other engines. It doesn't show on Richard's picture.

Thanks for the info, I realy appreciate it. My engine has the openings for the glass, the one on the cylinder is behind the camshaft, the one in the head is in the back of the engine. I can't help but think that the reason for these openings was to aid in holding the cores, a large core plug. The glass is a fancy cover up instead of a plate. Keith, if you can get me some pictures of the roller and reversing lever on the rocker arm and one of the water pump it would be a big help.
Thanks again,
J.B.

JB,
I somehow missed the last 3 or 4 entries (including the illustration) showing your engine. Very unusual!!

A slight footnote to history. The man I got my Fisherman from grew up in a MD. Eastern Shore family and he told me the watermen insisted the glass had to be available in a typical local hardware store or else the watermen would not buy the engine. I took this to mean typical window glass not some very thick specially cut glass. For what its worth have not taken mine apart but as the vertical glass is cracked that will be a summer job this year.

Ernie, I think that photo was taken at Arcadia, MD. about 25 years ago. It sure looks like my engine. Hope to bring it to CMM and hope JB will start it for me. The previous owner warned me not to reverse it unless it is tied down very well.

The engine above I posted because it showed the glass ports, most collectors around the world probably never heard of such a thing, after going through over 1800 eng names not another one used glass ports on the engine except accessories like oilers etc .

This I believe is Dick's Very nice "Fisherman"

This one is Bob Legnon's C.T. Wright posted in january.

J.B. or John S. when Bob visits could you show him this, one of the reasons for the post was to get this info to him about his engine, talking to him on the phone last week his computer is not up and he missed it !

Yes, I questioned that "Rubbery Compression" yesterday, then thought of it again today [when i went past a rubber shop haha]. I think it means soft to deal with, as opposed to 'stiff' compression., as these brochures are always boasting ease of operation/ starting

I can positivly state the engine on the trailer behind the Dodge Pick up does NOT have rubbery compression. In fact I can't pull it through compression. When running it for Dick I had to bump the intake valve on the compression stroke to release some compression allowing me to start it.
My guess is that the engine can be bounce started since it is reversable

My Fisherman starts on the bounce, you would need a bar to get it over compression.

I rubbery means it is not stiff and can be started on the bounce.
