Hi All,
I have single cylinder engine that I am trying to find any infomation about.
All I know is it is a "Record" single cylinder 2 stroke made in Brighton, Victoria here in Australia

I have had this engine in parts for at least 20 years, and feel its probably time to restore it to it former glory

The Solex 26 AHD carby is off a 1954 Ariel Square 4 motorcycle, and as per attached pic I asume was not standard when made. I was wondering what would be a suitable replacement.

Also note that the waterpump collar has no lubrication point on it I asume it should have a grease cap. The coller is brass and 1" wide and 3/8" thick.

Hi Klanger,

I have a couple of these, sans carbs. basically the carb in your pic looks very much like a Vinco Carb which I've been led to believe is a "knock off" of some sort of Kingston.

The Vinco carbs are a bit of a pig as it is difficult to tell the fuel level or indeed if there is fuel in the bowl.

Many OZ engines had their own carbs but often the manufacturer had an option for an Alpha, itself a "knock off".

Either way both carbs are quite easy of get hold of. The Alphas are often available on ebay and if you talk to somebody in your local engine club you should be able to find an Vinco or Alpha type carb.

Cheers,

Mark S.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the info on the carbies.
Not yet a member of an engine club. Not sure where they are about here,(Phillip Island) in victoria.

Where abouts are you located? Would like to have a gander at what you've got.

This is my one and only engine.

Kev.

Hi Mark,

Ahh yeah, bit far.

Would like to see some photos of your Record engines though. More so of the water pump collar, are they the same as mine?

Hi Guys, Well I'm on the way of re assembly of my engine, and need help in finding some new packing rope for the water pump. Can anyone help and tell me where to get some? and what size and type to get.

I have the engine assembled and the next thing to do is the pump, make up some more gaskets, and get her running.

Kev.

The attachments below are from a 1948 Motor Spares marine catalogue. The twin ad is from a rather soiled back cover, so I have cleaned it up a fair bit, though not into all the corners.
The make of carburettor was not listed, but it would be a Huskey, which is shown in the same catalogue under engine parts. By this time Motor Spares, Elizabeth St, Melbourne, either built the Little Husky marine engine or had them built for them. These engines were formerly built by Hi-Rev Bearing & Engineering Co, of Carlton, from at least 1937. Motor Spares took over from around 1945.

I like the kick starter. Was that common on any other engines?

As far as I know, the Record was the only Australian marine engine with a kick starter.

And anyone has a kick starter for one, let me know. Would love to get one to use as a pattern.

Kevin
