I am researching a dory to build and use on East Bay ,Galveston. The 22' plans require a 50 hp outboard. I want an inboard instead. I pull a 20' shrimp net in shallows so the deck space is a premium. What about using say a 20 hp. Palmer with a 3 prop instead of the 2?

I think it would depend on how fast you want to go and how heavy the boat is. 20hp may not plane the boat, would probably have enough power for the net, but getting there and back may be slow.

Azerman. Consider installing the outboard in a decked over through-hull engine well, inboard of the transom.

Do some of the small draggers have an inboard mounted well forward in a well to allow nets to come in over the transom?

Yea the draggers might work with the outboard. I just looked in on a new 50 hp. Evenrude and was shocked to the 8,000.00 price tag!
