Recently aquired a 4 hp Frisco and don't know much about these engines. No identifying tags and don't know where a engine number might be. A few questions;
1. What does the little spring bar that raises or drops a small cam on the rear side of the engine do?
2. There is an arm operating a butterfly valve above the carburetor; is this the throttle or is it some kind of governer valve (don't see any governer on the ngine), or is the speed controlled by an arm on the top of the Schabler carb?
3. Appears to be a wet exhaust; is this an earlier configuration or are all the 4 hp Frisco's built this way/
4. How can I determine age?
5. Any operating books or instruction sheets available?
6. Are they started by turning the flywheel or was there a starting crank?

1. The little spring bar releases the compression release cam to the run position.
2. Many early marine engines used more than one throttle. The scheduler may have been put on the engine as a retrofit upgrade.
3. All of the Frisco Standards That I have ever run had dry exhausts. You may be missing a water cooled exhaust elbow.
4. Look through copies of the Pacific Motorboat magazine and compare the drawings, engravings and photos in the Frisco Standard ads with your engine.
5. I haven't seen any manuals. everyone mostly take it from first principals. Just remember that a make and break igniter throughs a nickel size flash that will ignite an imperfect fuel air mixture at atmospheric pressure. If at first you don't succeed, try something different.
6. Yes. You roll the engine over your foot until you get really confident with its starting and then you can you can use your hand, or if you really have it set up right and have been running it you may be able to get it to start by flicking the igniter with a finger.
Have at it, their tons of fun

Hi - I used to run a similar Union with a plug cock for a throttle valve and mushroom valve petrol vaporizer. It had a crank with bicycle chain + ratchet for crank starting but this was a retro fit. We could tickle the vaporizer and pull the flywheel over by hand and she would start fine. See http://www.boatregister.net/Library/Maritime%20History/UnionGasEngineCatalogue_1 907_Opt2.pdf and http://www.boatregister.net/Library/Maritime%20History/UnionGasEngineCatalogue_1 913.pdf for Union books - Not Frisco but could be helpful.
The Union throttle valve was not used as this upset the mixture - Timing lever was more useful for speed control. Also used to run a Frisco but with a Schebler and could throttle down without needing to chase the mixture. It would hand start easily by pulling over the flywheel by hand. Friscos had water cooled exhaust bends with water injection holes at the end of the bend.
