The timing is fairly simple - Take out the spark plug so you can see / feel the Top Dead Centre - use that position on the flywheel to set the timer to a mid- position.
This will let you retard and advance the spark timing.
Krice carb - open the needle vale about 1 turn.

To start , move the time to retard position i.e. the spark occurs way after top dead centre.
Prime the cylinder with some fuel.

Grasp the flywheel and give it a flip back against compression - the engine should fire back - turning in the opposite direction and continue firing. This is called "bounce" starting- it means that you don't have to pull the engine over the compression at top dead centre.
Then move the timer lever to a position closer to top dead centre and the engine shold run better.
BUT make sure your engine is well bolted to a good strong base. The Gray 1 cylinder engine bounce around quite a bit.
