Hi,

My exhaust muffler (cast iron) has cracked on the bottom and leaking water. Not too bad, but wondered if there is someone who can make (or sell) an Exhaust for this set up in my boat. I don't mind how it fits between manifold and where it exits the boat, but needs to exit the boat where it exits now. Any suggestions? I am entering the boat in the Wooden Boat Festival in mid April in Sydney so will patch the muffler.

In about 2 weeks all the wood will be back in the boat and she will be back to former glory. Engine runs sweetly. Easy start with one hand on flywheel. Gorgeous! I will share more photographs of the work completed and video of engine running.

Looks Great. Rare to see an ancient Big Single living on a mooring in this part of the world!?

Doubt you could cast iron weld repair an old salty casting in iron, therefore suggest make new from 6" steel pipe and 2 discs. Weld and follow up with hot dip galvanising. Should last a long time, probably as long as a casting. If you are Sydney based, try Sydney Heritage Fleet workshops at Rozelle Bay - Saturday or Tuesday best.
The outlet pipe looks much smaller than the inlet pipe... Are the pipes sized same as the muffler casting?

Looks insufficiently supported to me. I'd suggest a flexible coupling on either side of the muffler and a bracket of some kind to hold it; they're not light. Some lagging might be a good idea too, although lots of cool water around for those that burn themselves.

Allan,

I will make do until after the Wooden Boat Festival and go with the suggestion made above. Seems most practical solution. I will bring in my existing exhaust after the Boat Festival. The leaking now not that bad, a small pan can collect the leaking water. A good amount gets out the exhaust outside the boat. I will bring the boat around for Ian to see the engine working and his new coupling. I will arrange in the week before the wooden boat show.

Remember this?

the original manifold from the cylinder to the muffler was quite substantial and a very thick wall thickness. It also ran straight out from the cylinder
