In trying to get a recently acquired Mullins one cylinder running, I ran into a stopped up screen that may be my problem. (The engine will pop, and run a few licks, then stop.)
Went through the timer, and it has excellent spark, and the carb is off of a running engine, so don't think those are any problem.
The screen looks like it runs from the base of the head, on the intake side, up to the intake hole. It's about 75% plugged up with rust, etc.
Don't know if I should drill it out, and if so, should I replace it with some other type of screening material?

The screen is there to prevent backfire, when an engine runs lean the flame is still burning when the new charge comes in. This results in a sneezing backfire. The screen can be removed with no problem, most engines didn't have them, it's there to cool the flame before it gets to the base. Before removing you could try oven cleaner and pressure washing.

any saftey concerns with removing it? Could that back-fire/sneeze spit fire out the carb/intake?

Hi - Metal gauze screen we covered in High School Science with Bunsen flame not passing the metal gauze. Gauze in intake is theoretically similar and designed to stop flame running back to set carby/vapouriser on fire and burning up your boat.

I've never seen a flame, but you may see something in the dark. It's a loud sneeze, let's you know to richen the carb. Try cleaning it first, if air passes through it should run.
