Does anyone have a copy of the Lockwood Ash Model 41 owners manual? The Louisiana crew seems to have sent out or misplaced their original copies.

lockwood -ash engine question. do the valves on the twin cylinder have springs or do they work as flapper valves?I have a 4 horsepower that was running but blowing back through the sheebler. I reground the valves and the engine wont start. There were two very thin weak springs in the valve chest but broke . Are these springs necessary?The engine has good compression and no more blowback but wont crank. Appreciate any advice. |

Doc,
A model 41 is a 5HP 4 stroke Lockwood Ash and the valves are spring loaded closed and opened by the camshaft. It sounds like you have 2 stroke Lockwood and the springs should be installed. Spring data may be available but would need to know what HP your engine is. The blowback may be a lean mixture condition.

Jim, Thanks for responding. Yes my engine is a 2 cycle two cylinder Lockwood. I think about 1902 , but guessing .I will try and post a picture, The valvesd had a very weak fine spring that was rusted and disentegrated. I dont know where to find the spring data and would appreciate any advice. Today I was contemplating the starting problem and have decided that the wet muffler may be the problem. I have set up the exhaust to go straight to a muffler and will see if that could be the problem causing the back pressure. I have never used a wet muffler before and was suspicious about it from the beginning. It may not be the problem but will try to find some springsand try again. I live in NE texas and have seen several videos posted on Utube by some guys in Lousianna, it looks like they almost all have Lockwoods in their Bateaus. You wouldn't know one of those fellas would you?Thanks again for your interest and any advice , |
