I put the St. Lawerence 6-8hp 2 cylinder in my boat. I liked the look of this engine with the individual cylinders, spoke fylywheel and removable heads. It always ran fine on the display stand. The first trip out was disapointing, specs call for a 14X18 prop, it was lugging bad with the 14X14 I had been using on my 4hp Lockwood Ash, the L-A would turn over a 1000rpm with one person in the boat. I put a 12X12 prop on and took it to the show at my camp the next day, still performing poorly. When I got home I checked and found the front cylinder low on compression, no bounce. The head gasket had blown, replaced it and went back to the bayou. It was now running better but if I had to guess it wasn't turning 800rpm with the small prop. I asked a friend to look at the leather washer in the Schebler while I was running full throttle, he said it was staying seated. I had the spring backed all the way off. Jamie pushed the washer back with a screwdriver and it reved up imediatly, probably 1200 or better. I went back to the shop, removed the washer from the carb and put the 14X14 back on, got the tach and launched again. It turns 1000 rpm with 3 of us in the boat, don't think it will ever swing a 14X18 but I'm happy with it.

J.B.and old time waterman warned me that one should cut one turn at a time from the narrow end of the breather valve spring and not from the big end. You then have to check the air valve opens fully when the throttle plate is opened
The other point that needs to be watched is the gasket on the top of the throat must seal the area between the top of the throat and the cover. My experience has been that the gap at the top of the throat can vary as much as a few thou to an 1/8". I use a neoprene O ring for the larger gaps and cork on medium gaps and paper on the thin gaps.

Thanks, I'll play with the spring on the air valve, as it is I have to richen it 1/2 turn when it idles. I have a good gasket on the cover.
