I am looking for new rings for my simplex 3-1/2HP.

They are 3" dia x 3/16".

I am hoping that Peter Ogborne or Tim Mulvey another Aussie can let me know where there is a secret warehouse full. But just 3 of them will do. I am in Brisbane.

Stephen, there is a company called JP Pistons in South Australia that can make rings to your order at reasonable cost.
Ph 08 8261 7222 or email [email protected]

I obtained rings for my Pilot engine within a few days.

Steve - welcome back, haven't heard from you for a while. You can get Simplex parts, including rings, from Hardman & Hall at 3 Stanton Rd, Seven Hills (in Sydney, Aust.) - tel 02 9624 6704 or your can get rings made to your specs by calling GS Burling T/A Panjay P/L at 45 Weardon Rd Frenches Forest (again in Sydney, Aust) - tel (M) 0412 228 235

Good luck

Steve , the advice that David and Tim have given you sounds good to me . There are other suppliers ,i have a collection of assorted rings and i have started to make my own , getting the cast iron material is hard but i have been lucky .
I would like a Simplex !!!!!!
They seem hard to find . I have the bits for a Tasman , just got a set of skew gears for the magneto drive so that is another project . Poor Tim , i am restoring a Sundial Carby for him and an oiler ....i'll get there some day!!

Thanks fellers for the quick response. Hardman and Hall has the rings I need.

The hull of my 14ft clinker is now immaculate, the deck gleams like a grand piano. With new rings and bearings coming, "Pelican" is not far from getting out and about chugging around the brisbane river, after years spent mostly in the shed. Here's a photo.
Thanks to you all,
Steve O'B

Steve - beautiful boat
Peter - I'm currently assembling the Sundial after a lot of work filling and cleaning the gears and painting, also making transporters for my 2HP Hornsby and Stuart P5 for my first working display in my local park in April with the Sydney Antique Machinery Club which I've now joined. You should have asked me re the bevel gear as I have an orphan one that probably comes off a Tasman as it was not common on marine engines.

Steve ,what a beautiful boat . I am interested ,i have a wooden boat as well . It has been out of the water for some time ,it is Carvel hulled .......is yours the same ?
Tim ,the skew gears that i found are from a Chapman or Blaxland [two sets]. It is a real challenge to restore this one ,badly corroded in the water jacket ,even into the bore .

Peter,

This is a clinker hull. This may horrify some purists, but I have sheathed the hull with Dynel. With its new life in and out of the water, I believe this was the only thing to do to get many years more life out of the boat.

Peter - apologies, I was thinking about magneto bevel gears when I made the comment.

Steve, You have done a magnificent job on Pelican. She is very similar to my "Sarah Kate" which is also a 14 foot clinker powered by a Stuart Turner P66. "Sarah Kate" with freshly oiled decks
